Patrick Stephen Barrett was destined for great things. His intelligence and philanthropic spirit were evident in his desire to support Riley Hospital for Children as he worked towards a career in medicine.
Patrick was the first patient to participate in the precision genomics program at Riley Hospital for Children. While too far into his journey to affect the outcome, the testing done will help determine the best way to treat children with similar diagnoses in the future.
Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health is the first to develop this innovative pediatric service line to guide patient care when there are no further traditional therapeutic options. The Pediatric Precision Genomics Program uses changes in tumor genetics or gene expression in combination with germ line genetics to provide individualized treatment recommendations for children with aggressive cancers.
This personalized medicine approach calls for developing a personalized treatment plan based on the patient's underlying mutations, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach of standard chemotherapy. Testing costs are high and insurance companies may not cover this expense. It is the Barrett family's desire that no family need worry about the costs associated with helping their child regain their health.
To honor Patrick's inspirational legacy, the Barrett family established the PS We Love You Fund to support precision genomic testing for children at Riley Hospital. Your gift here will help provide the opportunity for every child in need to have an individualized treatment plan developed to give them their best chance to fight cancer.
